Caring For Your Dentures The Way You Should

When you get dentures, you want to take good care of them. If you don't take extra steps to keep them in good condition, then you run the risk of them getting worn out faster, breaking or not fitting properly anymore. The steps you can take to care for them are easy and you can learn about them in this article.

Cleaning your dentures properly

You should clean your dentures every day in the right manner. You should take them out if you eat a meal that causes food to become stuck on them and clean them promptly. Otherwise, you want to remove them each night and give them a good cleaning. They should soak in a soaking solution overnight to ensure they are nice and clean.

To clean your dentures, take them out and use slightly warm water, a toothbrush and a denture paste to brush the teeth, as well as go over the gum areas. Verify that you have completely removed any adhesive if you use it to secure your dentures in place. Rinse the dentures well and put them in the soaking solution. Before you put them in your mouth, take them out and rinse them off in warm water. If you are going to be using adhesive, place a few small dots of the adhesive evenly on the dentures.

Handling your dentures with care

One of the most important things to be careful of is dropping your dentures. You don't want to underestimate how slippery they can be. Therefore, you should fill the sink up with some water and lay a washrag in the bottom of it before cleaning your dentures. Also, when you carry them, you should keep your thumb securely on the inner part of the dentures and at least two fingers on the teeth.

Putting your dentures in

Once you have put the adhesive in place, make sure you press them evenly into place. Dentures can change after time, so if you notice they start rubbing or feeling as if they aren't fitting right, then you want to take them in to have them adjusted

Wearing your dentures

When you eat, avoid very hard foods that increase your chances of damaging the dentures. Avoid foods that cause the top and bottom dentures to stick, such as gum or taffy.

Caring for your mouth

When you take your dentures out, you want to make sure you clean your gums with gauze and toothpaste, scrape your tongue to remove bacteria and food particles, and use a good mouthwash.

Now that you know how to care properly for your dentures, you will increase the chances of them lasting you for a longer period of time.
